Risky Business

Do you usually play it safe? If so, allowing yourself to take risks could benefit your professional and personal growth.

Why?

Risk-taking helps us to develop a growth mindset. It’s about embracing uncertainty and seeking new opportunities. And it often requires overcoming our personal emotions and sacrificing time, energy, and even money to get to where we want to be.

Now, I am not suggesting you throw all caution to the wind. But I AM saying that getting uncomfortable has its merits. After all, when we are comfortable, we tend to stay right where we are.

And I’m not telling you to be reckless. What I am referring to is calculated risks. Before you take a risk, weigh all the potential outcomes. Determine risk vs. reward.

Taking risks is very subjective. What may be a risk for you may not be for someone else. You can start with small risks and build your confidence from there. It could be something like public speaking or going to a networking event alone.

Roadblocks to risk-taking include fear, overthinking, procrastination, perfectionism and relying on being comfortable.

And benefits of risk-taking include:

  • It can give you a sense of accomplishment.
  • It can erase some of the things we think about ourselves.
  • I can increase confidence.
  • It can build resilience.

So, are you ready to get uncomfortable?
